The summer bus schedule came into effect on June 1 2011 on the island of Hvar, as the island geared up or the traditional surge in tourism from June to September. The bus service, run by Cazmatrans, is the sole method of public transport on the island, and is thus a crucial resource for locals and tourists alike.

A key strategy in the bus schedule is coordination with the primary ferry service to Hvar, the port of Stari Grad, which receives several ferries a day from Split, as well as occasional ferries from Dubrovnik and Italy. With the outstanding exception of the top season 0130 crossing, all ferries from Split are met by buses.

There are two bus options on arrival: the first is to Hvar Town, the most well liked destination on the island; and the second bus takes in the northerly coastal cities of Stari Grad, Vrboska and Jelsa. Visitors arriving on the early morning ferry should either make previous agreements or wait for the first bus leaving at 0710.

One of the common misunderstandings tourists have about island travel is the supply of public transport from the ferry. Hvar has 4 entry ports, Sucuraj and Stari Grad by vehicle ferry and Jelsa and Hvar City by catamaran. Only Stari Grad has an in-built public transport connection. Travellers to Jelsa and Hvar Town face a taxi ride for onward travel, while visitors arriving in Sucuraj have a 56km journey to the closest popular resort outside of Sucuraj.

Visitors desiring to go south to Dubrovnik by public transport are better suggested to go via Split unless they can accommodate the scanty Stari Grad to Sucuraj timetable into their check-list: 0430 from Stari Grad on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (to meet the 0630 ferry to Drvenik) and 1300 on Mondays and Fridays. Hitchhiking is a choice, but there’s small traffic after the ferry has unloaded.

The southern resorts of Zavala, Ivan Dolac and Sveta Nedjelja are preferred and full of traveller offers online, but tough to reach without private transport. A regular bus from Sveta Nedjelja will leave on Sundays at 1615 with a bus running in the opposite direction on Fri. afternoons.

The most frequent service in the new timetable is between Stari Grad and Jelsa, with lots of services going thru the inland towns of Svirce and Vrisnik. Along Dubrovnik area visitors will enjoy in the clear sea and more fit environment. The sole exemption where swimming isn’t endorsed are the port of Gruz and the Old town. Due to several ships and sewage water the sea quality in those areas must be improved before swimming can be endorsed.

The control measurements of the sea water quality around Dubrovnik is done yearly before the visitor season. Sadly, there arent beaches around Dubrovnik that have yet received the Blue Flag award, a Western European award that recognizes beaches with lofty standards referring to both sea water quality and supporting facilities. The sole received Blue Flags in Dubrovnik region are held by the ACI jetty Miho Pracat in Komolac, 6 km from Dubrovnik and the ACI marina on Korcula.

The most important event in the cultural life of the town is the once a year Dubrovnik Summer Festival. It’s a conventional holiday where all doors are open for artists to entertain the habitans of Dubrovnik and their guests with games, theatre and concerts (classical & folk music) between tenth of July and 25th of August, since 1950.
